Kitchen Cabinets

Dark colored cabinets can make your kitchen appear smaller and feel claustrophobic.  Lighten up your kitchen by painting the cabinets a softer hue, like white or a light grey. Create a low-contrast difference between the cabinets, the backsplash, and countertop. The closer they are in color value, the more open the space will feel. Another option is to remove the cabinet doors or replace the solid front with glass. Using glass doors, pulls the depth of the kitchen even further, visually creating a bigger space.

No Bulky Furniture

Stick to visually lightweight furniture, like bar chairs and a small industrial style island. Stainless steel appliances and furniture with metal touches aren’t visually distracting, and allows you to see beyond the furniture, making the room appear larger.

Look Above

If you have space on top of your cabinets, use it to display decorations and personal touches, like ceramic pottery, indoor plants, framed prints, etc. Make sure not to clutter the space! The goal is to increase the apparent height of the ceiling by moving the gaze upwards.

Enhance the Lighting

Maximize the natural light you do have by keeping window treatments minimal. Using white blinds dresses up your windows without blocking the light. If you don’t have enough natural light, add lights underneath your kitchen cabinets. This accent lighting will cast a pleasant ambient glow!

Eliminate Clutter

Clutter makes every room feel small. Start with the appliances on your counter. Store them in a cabinet that’s easy to access for food prep. Maximize counter space by removing produce, spices, and oils off your counter. You can also use magnetized spice holders that will stick to the sides of your fridge.
