The 3 Types of Lighting and How to Use Them
There are three types of lighting, ambient, task, and accent lighting. They all serve a different purpose, but they each add style and manipulate the mood in your space.
Ambient Lighting
Ceiling Recessed lighting, chandeliers, floor lamps, table lamps, and wall sconces.
It’s the first layer of lighting that provides the overall glow for your space. It’s just enough light to help you move around the space safely and comfortably. The goal is to create a uniform level and natural shade of lighting throughout your home.
Task Lighting
Desk lamp, reading floor lamp, bathroom vanity lights and under cabinet lighting.
Direct and strong lighting that helps you focus on completing a task, like food prep, cooking, writing, and reading. It’s brighter than ambient lighting and illuminates the focused area.
Accent Lighting
Outdoor recessed lighting, wall lights, and track lighting.
Accent lighting is used to highlight a piece of art or a creative point within the space. It’s similar to a spotlight, it brings attention and drama to something in the room. Accent lighting is commonly used in outdoor gardens or pathways, or on the wall on top of a piece of art.
