Window curtains create an extra layer of warmth and comfort to any space. If you have shutters on your windows, adding a light curtain on top of it will create a cozier environment. Did you know the width and height of your curtains affects the entire look of your space? A curtain too short or too narrow can make your window actually look smaller and not in proportion to the rest of the room. Here are 5 easy rules to follow to hang your curtains like a pro.
Rod Length
The length of the rod should be at least 8″ to 12″ longer than the width of the window (frame included). This leaves about 4″ to 6″ of extra rod length on each side of the window. This way, when you open the curtains, the entire window is visible to let in as much natural light as possible.
Rod Height
Use the height of the rod to create the illusion of higher ceilings and taller windows. Hang the rod halfway or two thirds between the ceiling or ceiling molding and the top of the window frame.
Curtain Fabric
Choose the type of curtain that best suits the space. If you feel that the space is too dark and doesn’t bring in enough natural light, choose light and airy curtains to embrace all the natural light.
Curtain Width
You need 2 curtain panels and each panel should be at least 1.5 to 2 times the width of each window.
Curtain Length
Generally, the curtain length is measured by the distance between the height of the rod and the floor. Give yourself at least 5″ to 10″ of extra length just in case your measuring is off – it’s easier to eliminate extra length! The bottom of your curtain should kiss the top of the floor. You can add more length if you want a more royal and formal look.
